Accra Academy’s 1991-year-old group (Bleoo), launched Saturday the 2022 Speech and Prize-giving Day and laid the foundation for the renovation of the Science Resource Centre.
The speech day will be held on October 29, 2022. Renovations are expected to be complete in September. The total cost of the entire program is estimated at GHc800,000.
In a speech read by the President, Mrs Efua Beer Mensah, Deputy Chairperson for the Planning Committee, stated that in recent years, it was a tradition for year groups of students to undertake a project as part of their responsibility to host the school’s annual speech and prize-giving days.
During the 90th speech and the prize-giving day program, she said that the mantle fell upon them.
Mrs Mensah said that she was inspired by Denzel Washington’s quote, “It’s not about how much you have or what you’ve achieved. It’s about who and what you’ve lifted up, who you made better, and what you give back.”
She stated that the group shares the belief of Mike Satterfield, “Even if one life is changed forever,” and added: “This is our credence, and this is what we will strive for.”
The Deputy Chairperson urged all Accra Academy students to support the cause for the ’91 group, to give back to their alma mater and build a better Ghana.
The President of Accra Academy Old Boys Association (AAOBA), Mr Kofi Amoah-Awuah, praised the ’91 group because they accepted the challenge to host the speech day. It was a difficult and daunting task.
He promised AAOBA support for the group, as it does for all other groups that take up projects.
Past students from the country and abroad were informed by Mr Amoaa-Awuah that it was difficult for the Association to pool people together. However, he stated that efforts were being made in order to bridge the gap between year groups.
The Headmaster of Accra Academy, Mr Emmanuel Fiemawhle said that the decision of the ’19 year group to renovate the Science Resource Centre for their anniversary project cannot be over-emphasized in this era, particularly since science, technology and mathematics are the driving forces of today’s global development and world.
He thanked them for taking on the challenge and also for sponsoring the prize-giving ceremony and speech.
Mr Fiemawhle stated that over the years, the school has had a tremendous amount of help from the boys, including in the development of infrastructure, students’ awards, the provision of teaching materials and motivation.
“This enthusiasm among older boys has had a positive impact positively to a considerable extent on the enrolment, development and school – this is evidence of old boys asking to take on one or more projects.
“And of course, the large number of BECE students choosing the school as their first option is sufficient evidence of the trust and faith parents have in it to deliver quality education to their children.”
He stated
The headmaster thanked all of the boys who contributed in some way to the success of the learning institution.
“While I appreciate the efforts of individuals, year groups, and corporate organizations to address the challenges facing Accra Academy, I wanted to appeal for more robust, conscious efforts to engage the wider spectrum of year groups and individuals who are not yet part of the team to join the few selfless individuals who have devoted themselves to making Accra Academy what they want it to be,”
Mr Fiemawhle stated.
